Audra McDonald is unrivaled in the breadth and versatility of her artistry as both actor and singer. Audra McDonald, winner of Six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was named as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People. President Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -the nation's most prestigious award for achievements in this field. With a stunning soprano, and an unrivalled talent for dramatic truth-telling She is equally comfortable on Broadway and the opera on stage as she is in role in television and film. Alongside her theatrical work she has a thriving career as a recording and concert artist who performs regularly at world's foremost venues. Born into a musical family McDonald grew up living in Fresno California and received her classical training in the New York's Juilliard School. Her first Tony Award in 1994 for the Best Performance of the Featured Actress in a musical for Carousel which was staged at Lincoln Center Theater. The following four years, she was awarded two additional Tony Awards as a featured actor on Terrence Mcnally's Broadway debuts Master Class (1996) and Ragtime (1998). The total number of Tony Awards is unprecedented at three prior to the age of thirty. In 2004 she won her fourth Tony starring alongside Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and in 2012 she won the fifth time and first time for the category of leading actress for her performance as the title character for her role in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. As the Tony Awards' most decorated performer, she had the chance to set Broadway history when she received her sixth Tony Award portraying Billie Holiday as Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill. This role also provided the platform to make her Olivier Award nominee 2017 London West End debut. The first actor to be awarded in four different acting categories, McDonald also broke the record for the amount of awards an actor has won. McDonald was also seen in The Secret Garden (1993), Marie Christine (1999), Henry IV (2004) as well as 110 In the Shade (2007 Twelfth night (2009) and Shuffle Along: the Making of the Musical Shock of 1921 and All That Followed (2016). She made her Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut with Twelfth Night (2009). McDonald's debut as a dramatic actor on television was on the Peabody Award-winning CBS show Having Our Say The Delany Sisters' first 100 years. The next time she appeared on television was that of a character actor on the NBC show Law & Order Special Victims Unit where she starred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber. McDonald's Emmy nominated performance as Emma Thompson in Mike Nichols' HBO film adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner Wit was produced by Mike Nichols. McDonald's return to television networks was in 2003, in which she co-starred with Josh Brolin in Mister Sterling. In 2006, McDonald appeared on WB's The Bedford Diaries. The next year, she appeared as a recurring actor on NBC's Kidnapped. McDonald's character in HBO movie Lady Day At Emerson Bar and Grill earned her four times an Emmy nomination in the year 2016. The Bite is a drama with six episodes based on an epidemic, produced by Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. McDonald starred with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. The year 2009 saw her debut, McDonald was the U.S. Attorney Liz Lawrence on CBS's legal drama The Good Wife. In 2018 McDonald reprised her role as Liz Reddick as a regular on Paramount+'s The Good Fight. She was awarded three Critics Choice Award nods for the role. McDonald guest-stars in Julian Fellowes historical drama The Gilded Age.
